Pima College Adult Education’s (PCAE) Family Literacy Program (FLP) has been providing high-intensity, comprehensive, and integrated Family Literacy services in Pima County since 1991. The mission of the FLP is “Teach the parent, reach the child, change the future.” The FLP has been a local, statewide, and national role model of a stellar, award-winning program, fostering family economic and educational success, independence, and pride. What began as a three-site program through a Toyota Motor Corporation grant from the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) has grown to nine current sites with multiple funding sources. PCAE is the fiscal agent and grant recipient for five sites, while also providing adult education, training, coordination, and data collection for an additional four sites in the Sunnyside Unified School District (SUSD). Additionally, the FLP was chosen as a statewide Family Literacy mentoring program for eight consecutive years, has a National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) certified trainer, was selected by the NCFL for two Toyota program grant awards, and presents at local and national conferences to standing-room-only crowds. The FLP has also been successfully administering an AmeriCorps program since 1994. Students in the Family Literacy Program regularly exceed the academic state target goals.

Health Guide America (HGA) is a non-profit organization that promotes consumer health education and supports a stronger role for individuals and families in directing their own health care. The website guides individuals to useful, reliable consumer health information. New resources being developed include concise, practical guides to information on specific conditions. We emphasize the need to help consumers identify and locate health information from reliable sources, since the amount of information available can be overwhelming. We also stress the need for individuals to become engaged in their own health care and make informed, responsible decisions. HGA hosts regular meetings of the Health Guide Arizona Consumer Connection, a workgroup of organizations that share consumer health information and develop ideas for engaging consumers.
